Common questions

Vestibular physiotherapy FAQs

Vestibular physiotherapy is a specialised form of physiotherapy that assesses and treats disorders of the vestibular (balance) system. Conditions treated include BPPV, vertigo, dizziness, vestibular neuritis and balance disorders caused by inner ear or neurological changes. Treatment uses specific exercises and repositioning manoeuvres to retrain the brain and reduce symptoms.

Common conditions treated include benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, unilateral vestibular hypofunction, concussion-related dizziness and general balance disorders. If you experience ongoing vertigo, dizziness, or feel unsteady on your feet, a vestibular assessment can identify the cause and guide treatment.

BPPV — the most common cause of positional vertigo — often resolves in one to three sessions using the Epley manoeuvre or similar repositioning techniques. Other vestibular conditions may take longer, typically involving a graduated home exercise programme over several weeks. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic timeline after your initial assessment.

No referral is needed. You can book directly with Geoff or Zach at our Mooloolaba or Nambour clinics. If you have a GP referral and a relevant chronic condition, you may be eligible for a Medicare CDM plan covering up to 5 allied health visits per year at no cost to you.

Medicare doesn't cover physiotherapy directly, but if your GP has issued a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, up to 5 allied health visits per year may be bulk billed. Private health fund rebates are also available with extras cover. See payment options →
